Axis Wing Set

New Beauties for Pumping

After dozens of severe impacts it was about time to replace my old home-made 1150 Axis front wing and my 460 back wing with a new pair.

I've decided to go for ECC eSpread275CHT carbon fiber deck layer because it looks awesome 💪 For making the wings I re-used my old molds of the original 1150 and 460 Axis wings shown in the pic below.

The molds are not really our best engineering effort (there are smarter ways to do it as we've learned over several iterations) but they get the job done.

The carbon fiber layup for the 1150 front wing (each side) was as follows:

  • 275 g/m² carbon top-layer 0/90°
  • 400 g/m² biax carbon ±45°
  • 200 g/m² unidirectional carbon + several reinforcements with the same material (spar like)
  • 160 g/m² carbon fiber 0/90°
  • no glass layer despite being shown in the pic below

I used a self-made super-strong EPS foam core instead of a CNC'd Airex core. It's just a little heavier (~100g) but has excellent strength due to the mixture of the EPS with epoxy.
